Forum: GratefulDead Subject: 5/10/80 AUD .

This will come as eye rolling old news, to those who know this show, but this is a n tremendous show ! For us who grew up with the, frankly, lackluster "Dead Set", 1980 (except for the acoustic sets), seemed somewhat lacking, in comparison to previous eras . The story for me, for the last few years ,has been the discovery, how good the early Brent years could be, when taken on their own merits, and this show is exhibit A .
The old "Tapers Guide" , thinks highly of this one, the amazing 2nd set,and its great jamming, and cool set-list, but what got me about this show ( and this famous AUD tape ) was how powerful some of the shorter songs were . "Passenger",and "Far From Me", usually ok to me , seemed really strong, Jerry''s guitar on fire .And the double encore "Alabama>Sat. Night ", normally, take it or leave it (especially "Sat. Night", that got stale later on) just hit the ball out of the park ! Part of this is the 24bit AUD . The usual trade offs, of a Aud vs. a SBD apply here . Some of the inner detail is lost, but the overall feel is great, and powerful . Sort of like a fist, as opposed to five (6 here...) separate fingers.
So here's to good AUDs ! I just wished there were no firecrackers in "Comes a Time" !

the band sounds somewhat distant on the aud, the second set sbd is pretty good and a significantly higher recording level

Really good 2nd set. As jer noted, a strong Rider. China Cat is a bit ragged, and skip the Feel Like A Stranger, but the entire Comes A Time through Sugar Mag sequence is good. I like the SBD strat mentioned.

This is good example of a show where, to "get it" you probably need both . I sometimes will go with an AUD for the first set, and a SBD for the second !
DM, do you skip the "Stranger" because you don't think it is a good version (I liked it) or you don't like the song ?
Anyway, for someone like me,with a strong pre-Brent bias, this 2nd set is a good reminder how good they could be past the Keith era .

While I generally don't like Feel Like A Stranger, I do enjoy some of the freaky 80 and 81 versions. This one just seemed a bit flat to me. I'll try it again.

A few other nuggets from the period I think you will love:

Althea and GDTRFB from 04/28, good 1st set with a huge Passenger from 04/29, a great 1st set from 05/06, a real solid 2nd set from 05/08, Jack Straw and GDTRFB from 05/15.

I finished my (fun) homework assignment . Pretty much as you said . Might add that the 2 pre-drums Other Ones (4/28, and 5/6) are pretty great, especially the 5/6 one . That only weak show for me was the 4/29 one, the first set is as you say good, but the second's lack any serious jamming, and no Jerry ballad, and the post drums Miracle>Bertha>Good Lovin' is exciting , but maybe a little light on "substance" . I bet it was a lot of fun to be there though .
And I forgot that part of 5/15 is on "Go to Nassau" . The AUD has the whole show though .
Again, thanks for the recommendations in a period I don't know well .

Excellent! There is a lot of great music in 1980, but also some bad, so the best thing to do is find out where the good stuff is, get it, and ignore the rest. It's funny how so many people complain about the bad 80's music when it's so simple to just come to this site, ask a few questions, and find enough quality stuff to fill a bunch of discs.

Thanks . I had to dig though my shows, to find them (though strangely not I didn't get 5/6 which I will DL , but my burner is acting up ), will be fun to take a mini spring tour in 1980 !
